Electric Goose (Egg)

A few weeks ago I attended a spiritual retreat. During that retreat an Episcopal priest named Father Bart told a story about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a man I had never heard of. A pilot and writer whose most well known for "The Little Prince." Again, never heard of inspite of it's reputation as being the third most read book.

Fr. Bart was trying to get across to us the idea of the interconnectedness of life. (Sounding familiar?) He told a story of this famous writer/pilot who joined the French resistance to battle the Germans. He told of a German who left his university behind to fight for his country. This fella had been writing a paper or his thesis, I'm not certain which, on St.-Exupery. He idolized the man as a great writer. Upon finding that he was the one to shoot down this beloved writer he had something of a melt down and spent time in an asylum. I can't find anything on this particular part of the story. However, I did find several biographies on St.-Exupery. I think you'll find them interesting.

Here is one snippet from a page I found, again, I think you'll find it sounds familiar, this comes from a time in St.-Exupery's life when he was sent to rescue pilots who had crashed in the Sahara, where The Little Prince, which he wrote much later, takes place:
In order to overcome this deadly boredom, which may take possession of a man under such conditions, Saint-Exupéry establishes ties with the
Spaniards and soon wins them over with his games of cards and his telepathy demonstrations.

Here's what Yahoo Books had to say about The Little Prince:
Part fable, part fairy tale, part philosophy of life, THE LITTLE PRINCE tells the story of a pilot who crashes his airplane in the Sahara Desert, where he meets the Little Prince, a visitor from another planet. The Little Prince tells the pilot he has been traveling to many distant asteroids to get advice on how to care for his rose, the only flower that grows on his tiny planet. The Little Prince's journey is frustrating until he travels to Earth, where he learns about love, friendship, responsibility, and beauty.

All of it reminded me very much of The Visitor. So I'm headed off to purchase The Little Prince. Here's the URL for one of the biographies on St.-Exupery:
http://members.tripod.lycos.nl/tlp/antoine.htm

Enjoy...

We read it at school, in French class... it's really a great story!

I think I'm gonna have to read it again though - in German ... :o)
And the Oscar goes to... (F_U_N_G_U_S)

Well... just from the description, I'd say the "Little Prince" already knows a lot about responsibility, just by taking on such a trek to care for the rose...

You make a good "connection", Lisa. I have a copy of The Little Prince, a gift from San4 who holds this story near and dear. We mentioned it often in our Visitor discussions, for which she should receive all the credit.

"It is only with one's heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
(Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)

The Little Prince is really an astonishing and marvellous story. Everyone should have read it.
