View Full Version : Rethinking

After last September 11th:
*government intrigue was no longer entertaining
*Coming home to nightly news was suspense enough
*no need to look out into space for earth-shattering experiences
*the quasi-rational framework to explain The Visitor's new skills in a fan fiction (conceived of years before) suddenly became too terribly close to what we now dread

Finally, though, I can re-claim some enjoyment in this fiction. A hero-figure who would fight desperately to avert disaster, would keep trying even when it looks like he cannot win . . . . maybe the time for this story has not passed, after all.

Anyone up for watching The Visitor videos?

What episode you wanna start with Kefla? My tapes are aging gracefully, but I'm still willing to risk it.

Oh, and while I'm here, I'd like to know what the remote chances of getting THE VISITOR on DVD are? How much of a pipe dream is that? Awwww... c'mon! Making DVD's today is wicked cheap! Please? Pleeeeeeeze? I'm begging here. Actually, I'm groveling - and it's humiliating, but I'll do it if it meets with some results. *sob*

You read my mind, Pat. I was so wanting to substitute "DVD" for the "video" in my post. Surely there is *some* way for dedicated Centropohoics to get digital copies of The Visitor. Since our request is, so far, beyond what money can buy, maybe we could earn them, LOL. Does Electric (or would it be FOX?) have any windows that need washing?

Ah well, I have 10 of the episodes immortalized on my TIVO hard drive - no matter that the machine doesn't function properly with that much data saved.

Oh, and I think I'll start my Visitor viewing with The Trial - there's something about that beach scene . . . .

And the Oscar goes to... (F_U_N_G_U_S)

actually, anyone with a DVD writer (which is getting cheaper, by the minute), a hi-res video capture card, and a bunch of hard drive space can make them :]

I want *clean* DVD's Fungus. Ones made from the studio masters - not a forever-immortalized version with the FOX or Sci-fi station logos on 'em. Ja know?

I was just researching DVD-writers the other day! They cost around $500 right now, and the software is around $300! Also, the indiviual discs are approximately $16 each! I agree, it would be nice to have masters without the logos but I'd take logos and all if I could transfer my tapes to DVD. I already have a 64Mb video capture card so I'm all set there.

CD-writers were terribly expensive when they first came out and their prices have dropped considerably - so I'm just going to hang in there and hope the DVD-writers will too!

I sure wish Sci-Fi would start showing The Visitor again. Anyone up for emailing them and begging?

Emma, I'll definitely email the Sci Fi Channel again. I'm thinking a snail mail would be good, too. (Those automated responses make me wonder where the email actually goes.)

Hey! My fingers are still half asleep this morning but the BBS posted anyway.

Good idea about the snail mail, Kefla! It was succesful in a certain "other" campaign. Right?

I just finished watching two "elder-heavy" episodes, Teufelsnacht and Caged. Talk about entertainment! It's been too long since I'd watched Visitor videos. IMO, this series has Corbett's latest series beat, no contest, in terms of pure entertainment value. (um, could be the sci fi fan in me that's talking)

No argument here, Kefla! "The Visitor" is a series that will always be ageless IMHO. "Caged" and "Reunion" will always be my favorites. I especially like the scenes between Van Patten and Adam in "Caged". As for "Reunion" - don't get me started! Let's just say I felt his pain. And the flashbacks when Constance and Adam were dancing were amazing!

Just watched ID4 last night on FOX, and it got me thinkin.

ID4 was an outward battle fought against a very visible enemy. (Visible, hell, their ships were the size of cities!)

But in The Visitor, the enemy wasn't so known. It was more about facing our INWARD enemy. Ourselves. Adam wanted to stop the inward war that our nations are fighting, against an enemy that is hard to beat. Hatred. (The root cause of most of our wars) How do you fight an enemy that you can't shoot a missile at? That was Adam's struggle, and why he had to deal with things on a one-by-one basis, to effect the change he was after. It wasn't as simple as pointing some big guns or planting a virus in a mother ship.

An aside note, I caught the (Gary) Levinson (sp?) connection in ID4 this time 'round. heheheh

Sheri, nice post. The Visitor left the definition of the "enemy" sufficiently ambiguous, both within and without, to allow lots of interpretations. O'Ryan talked about how the Elders would deem "this experiment" tainted and destroy the earth and everyone on it. But Adam put a different spin on it.

"You and I both know mankind has sealed its fate. The Elders - they don't even abduct specimens anymore and do experiments. . . . Well, I'm not gonna stand by and watch my world be extinguished. I'm gonna do something about it."

Michael: "And if you're discovered?"

Adam: "Well, at least I will have tried."

Emma, sounds like we're talking about pairs of episodes, now. LOL Ham and eggs, coffee and donuts, cookies and milk . . . . .

Maybe others have favorite "go together" eps, as well.

Now THERE's a line I've incorporated into my everyday speech. "Well, at least I will have tried."

That has got to be my mostest favoritist scene of the whole series.

Kefla, I don't know about those two eps going together - I just know I especially loved the acting in those two eps - and the photography. I guess that's what "pairs" them in my mind.

I really loved all 13 eps - each one of them was beautifully produced, acted, and filmed. I wish someone would put us out of our misery and produce a DVD of these eps so that we'll always have them. Yes, I know that even DVD's won't last forever, but at this time it's a better medium.

Maybe if we dropped enough SUBTLE HINTS to the powers that be, we might get our wishes granted?

HINT

HINT HINT

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINT

;o)

Emma, I was just joking around about Visitor eps that go together. But you're right, each of the 13 episodes has something special to offer (plot, photography, acting, a funny line . . . something to recommend it).
