Well gang... y'all know what today is, right? It's been FIVE long years, and this fan hasn't forgotten. Here's my salute to THE VISITOR, which preemed five years ago today. If the show was still being produced, we'd have 4 seasons and about 90 episodes in the can right now. *sob* Unfortunately, we'll just have to cherish the 13 that we do have.

All cyber glasses up for a toast to THE VISITOR...

*CLINK*

Has anyone asked the question which I will now ask-

Dean? You ever thought of a TV movie?

Chris
The FOX Plant

Add my toast to the soiree. I just finally got THE VISITOR up here on Space Channel. YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!

Watched ID4 last night. Where it all began. ;-)

Oh, Sheri, it started much earlier than that. Say 1977? Like Dean, one movie caught my attention that forced me to take my parent's involvement in the industry seriously.

Yeah Chris! With the seeming "kiss and make up" with Fox, maybe they can do a TV movie (ala Alien Nation, where they have the occassional movie that helps move along the overall storyline).

Sheri, you of all people should know that the D&E connection began with Moon 44 ;]

Even their 'blockbuster' status started with Star Gate, as a sleeper hit (but Universal Soldier got some recognition too).

Chris, a telemove as a writer, producer, actor or extra??

His part in "3:15" was interesting to watch. (Dean cringes in corner, takes gum from his mouth and throws it at me.)

I've noticed that not all Dean's work is down on the industry Database. (have to check the books for that one. I think he's done one (or I'm thinking of his dad)

Dean???

Uhhh... folks, Sheri was referring to where THE VISITOR began, not the bigger picture of D&E and Centropolis' history. Arguably, THE VISITOR may not have ever been made if it wasn't for ID4.

After completing ID4, D&E wanted to make a movie about "good" aliens. They hashed through all of the plot points they wanted to tell, and realized it wouldn't all fit neat and tidy in a 2-hour motion picture, so they decided to venture into television.

As everybody knows, Jeff Goldblum played the role of David Levinson in ID4. What isn't commonly known is that John Corbett was originally set to play that part. When Goldblum's schedule opened up at the last minute, Corbett was out, and Goldblum was in. D&E later offered the lead in THE VISITOR to Corbett because they felt he was right for the role, and since things didn't work out for Corbett on ID4.

So Sheri is absolutely correct: it all started with ID4. :o)

But it continues with us. Mike, what is it you do again? Any hope for a writer who really wants to write but is feeling non-inspired and living in "was going to be Hollywood South"?

Sorry, frustrated.

Chris
The FOX Plant

Well Bambi, I've got to agree with you there. I was going a little *too* far back.

I do agree that John was the best person for the role of Adam McArthur. I can't imagine another actor creating the persona of a pilot taken and taught - cognited in a quest given by good-guy aliens as he did, by just being John.

I first saw him appear in the Wonder Years in '88, then he really blew me away in Northern Exposure. Now he's got another role coming for the fans to enjoy.

I think Bambi's gonna be in love. LOL

And yes, ID4 began The Visitor story, sorta, cuz Fox initially wanted D&E to make "ID4 the series" essentially.

On a side note, it's interesting, looking at it now, in light of current day events, to see America and Iraq working together against a common enemy. Almost scary even. :o()

Well, they did a few years ago. That's there the problem started.

Don't you think it's about time for The Visitor Pt 2? Dean left it sorta open at the end.

But then taking the brain of a train-squished fat guy and creating a slim, healthy body for it, in another project, was also a good idea.

Sheri, remember the Iran Contra scandal? That all stemmed from US involvement FOR Iraq in the Iran/Iraq war. So long before ID4, the US was working with Iraq.

But I digress.

Here's a thought on the matter though: If Fox wanted "ID4 the series", why did they even allow D&E to make the Visitor, being such a tremendous departure as it was?

Hollywood sells genres. They duplicate success.... that's the business.

Though The Visitor laid other genres along side, the *main* genre was still sci-fi. and it's recognized as a sci-fi, not a Detective story.

Someone once had the brilliant idea: "Hey, let's give them two for the price of one". That's why virtually every film made now is a combination of two or three genres. But the theme encompases the main genre, that either has as it's base, Myth, Fairytale or Drama.

There are six major genres and umpteen sub-genres to choose from. The best thing about The Visitor from my eyes is the introduction of a different genre element in each episode. In one episode Dean uses melodrama...

Hey, we could have some very interesting discussions on this. We have new blood! And he's SMART blood. heehee

And yes, when you think about it....even Sci-fi's have a character story in them...(well, most good ones do), so is it a Drama or a Sci-Fi? I think a lot of films are cross-genred.

Well, I won't disagree, but I think the point of my question was mis-taken:

ID4 is SciFi, so is the Visitor. That's where the similarities end. I mean, it's extremely easy to tell even from the beginning that the Visitor is nothing like ID4, yet if ID4 is what Fox wanted, why did they "settle" for the Visitor?

"It's a bloody good story, told...well". (Foxtel exec)

If I finished the quote by adding the "exeptionally" bit, Dean would get a big head.

It's the age old story of "We'll let them BEGIN this, and we'll sway them later." ;-) When they coudn't sway, they axed.

Apparently it wasn't "good enough" for Fox to keep it on the air. (although they should've. It wasn't like they were suffering in ratings/sponsors, just suffering from "temper tantrum syndrome" :]

In this day and age of Reality TV and making "big ratings" out of shows that pride themselves on hurting other's feelings, cheating on your partners, and lying/stabbing each other in the backs....The Visitor just wouldn't fit in to that kinda market.

(Friend or Foe, Dog Eat Dog, Weakest Link, et al)

TV wasn't like that 4 years ago. "America's Most Wanted" and "Cops" was about the only 'reality' on TV.

I agree Sher, some of this reality TV is just getting too freaking repulsive.. not really too much fun to watch anymore.

Did anyone catch the shots of John Corbett on TV the other night - SAG awards I believe, with Greek wedding? *clink*
