And the Oscar goes to... (F_U_N_G_U_S)

I complain about this movie just about as much as anybody, but I'm also one of it's biggest supporters. So bear with me:

I have really crappy computer speakers. I mean REALLY crappy. These are the kind that come 'built into' a monitor, but where removed and I guess rewired to work more or less normally.

Well, I clicked on a godzilla roar wav file, not realizing I had the speakers turned a little too high (as crappy as they are, if I turned them up 100 % I'd be completely deaf).

Now, note, wav files for me play in winamp, who's internal volume I had set to about 15% at the time.

So the wav file begins to play...

My ears are still bleeding.

Which got me thinking (again), about G98. How on earth could Nik be THAT close to Godzilla when he let out a roar, and not be in massive pain, and have some significant loss of hearing for the rest of the movie?

Also, aren't sounds at certain decibels capable of actually knocking somebody unconscious?

Dunno. I can stand 15 feet from a jet engine dragster winding up it's turbine and going through the whole afterburner pops, without having my hands over my ears. (Picture standing next to a jet fighter about to take off...same thing) They're so loud you FEEL it in your chest. Of course, my ears are ringing afterwards, and I'm kinda deaf for awhile, but hey..

I used to stand in front of two 100W Marshall stacks turned up to "eleven" for 3 hours at a time daily for 5 years. Of course, my ears are shot now, but that's besides the point. LOL I did live to tell about it. ;o)

Well, I was trying to figure the math of it (way beyond me of course), but figuring size and lung capacity, a roar from Godzilla would have to be in the range of 1500+ decibels (humans can go deaf at what, 240 or less?). To make speakers capable of it would require several, multi THOUSAND watt speakers to replicate such a sound. Even a second of such a sound would knock someone unconcious, probably pierce their ear drums, and leave them deaf for at least several days.

Imagine Sheri yelling in your ear. Ouch.

Now imagine if Sheri mutated several hundred times her size, then shouted in your ear again.

Humans can sustain permanent shift in hearing sensitivity with exposure to 90 dB to 110 ,dB. I'd have to refresh my memory with a text, but even lower intensity sound exposure could be a problem.

Godzilla would have a killer voice, I guess.
The sounds I recall were the pitiful ones as Godzilla was dying on the bridge. A mother of a preschool child at work just mentioned that this week. Her son's reaction to Godzilla was overwhelming sadness because "the mommy and the eggs died" in the end.

Sheri - not the point - Godzilla always had a distinct voice - if you will, and Dean and co kept true to that. It's one on my favorite wave sounds I have on my puter here at work.

Ok, now Mark - I would have loved to seee glass explode out of windows when G roared. I think that would be a great effect. So yes, I'd say Nik should have been blown away.

> Pat - you metal head!

'Tis true. [grin]

And may I say yet again how much easier it is to read here. Where's Andrew? I need to give him a big wet kiss. LOL

I agree - I like it.
Yes, Sheri, lizards do make a noise. With G the sound is caused by the rattle in his lungs and their breating out, sorta like asthma. With G the wheeze turns into a roar much like a hippo.

As I have eucalyptus trees around my home/office, my salamander doesn't have a problem with asthma so she's relatively quiet.

(Komodo) Dragons purr (sort of really deeply), when they're happy or when they've seen a producer...

Some lizards hiss, others purr. I can't imagine G purring, though.

WSAI, you are correct on the lizard thing, but not quite on the Godzilla thing. His 'sound' is most definetly a roar, and over the years he's been giving various vocalizations in Toho's attempt to instill a distinct personality. He does his famous bell roar (the Skreeeee-oooong one) as a triumphant thing ususally. But he does have 'wail' roars and other emoting sounds. Moreso than your average lizard ;]

Whoa! Deja Vu Mark! I was looking out the window this morning and heard a little skreeee-ooong myself (mini though it was..a little chamillion lizard) popping out a red flap under its chin over and over on the window sill. A few hours later went into a "bargain" store to help someone move a dining room set with the truck, looked across the room and saw Godzilla perching in front of a building. It was the 3-D Wall Art '98 Toho still in the wrapper!!! What a find!
