I know this is sorta old news, but I found it an interesting read. It might be funny if it wasn't so serious. *sigh*

From Daily Variety
5/28/02

Inside Move: Terror goes to movies
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

It's Godzilla to the rescue.

Last week's terrorist threat warning for the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge apparently was issued after an Al Qaeda prisoner kept referring cryptically to the monster pic.

FBI investigators interrogating Abu Zubaydah then rushed out and rented Roland Emmerich's "Godzilla," the 1998 remake starring Matthew Broderick, according to published reports over the weekend.

The film depicts Ms. Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge being imperiled by the dragon-like creature. In the final scene, Godzilla becomes entangled in the wires of the famous span.

Zubaydah offered fragmented info, including the possibility that terrorists might attack "the bridge in that movie" -- referring to the 1998 "Godzilla." Zubaydah, believed to be a top Al Qaeda lieutenant, also reportedly said "the statue in the water" might be a target.

FBI investigators deduced from watching "Godzilla" that he was talking about the Statue of Liberty.

After the viewing, investigators decided to warn a special FBI-New York Police Dept. joint terrorist task force. In turn, the task force alerted New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Kelly decided to make the threat public after tightening security at city landmarks.

A New York Police Dept. spokesman declined to discuss last week's terrorist warning, or Kelly's decision to go public. "I don't know what the hell you are talking about," the spokesman told Daily Variety when asked about "Godzilla."

The statue depicted in the movie was actually of Benjamin Franklin near the Flatiron building :]

But this guy has done nothing but lead the FBI on wild goose chases, so I don't see any reason to actually trust him.

And it doesn't take watching G98 to decide possibly making the Statue of Liberty a target.

The Statue may be a good target if you merely want to hit a SYMBOL, but as a Terrorist target?
No way. Not enough body count for these disgusting cockroaches in human form.

Squash anyone? You never know, thats why it pays to be prepared. The statue is actually a symbol of freedom for the entire world, though it happens to be here.

I've got to get the Godzilla DVD.

Haven't got the.... :drops jaw: DVD!?!?!?!??!

I beg you... NO! Command you to go and buy it now! It is a must! Infact, it is the loudest, grandest, DVD in my collection. (And yes, I have The Abyss and T2 DVD's, but nothing matches the might that is GODZILLA!

Ya vole, commandante! You've convinced me. This DVD on the 'puter is just awesome. Played part of The Black Stallion today for tests, and it is incredible. Hoyt Axton did such a fine job. Didn't he also play the father in Gremlins? Caleb Deschanel was cinematographer for TBS, and also did Devlin/Emmerichs The Patriot. Now, if you want to hear good sound, check that one out, with the John Williams score.

Sheri I wuv you too, but for cripes sake I was just an extra.(Which was QUITE an honor) And even if I wasn't I would have to agree with everyone I have ever talked to that said The Patriot is one of the finest movies ever made.

wow... Sorry Will, I can't tell you just how much I disagree with that statement. But in all honesty, can you say (in fact, can anyone here say) that you're not just a little biased? :]

Sherri, did you say Will was an extra on The Patriot! Amazing! Where can I see him at in the picture?

Where can I see you at in the picture, Will?

By the way, Will, have you gotten that Godzilla DVD yet? ;)

I think one can get it for like $9.49 at Wal-Mart these days. Fungus, I used to like you, and even had intentions of bringing you some squash and venison this summer, but at this point, you can just forage on your own. Juuuust kidding, Juuuuust kidding, you're one of my favorite artists! Now, shall I just copy that email you sent me saying what a wonderful movie The Patriot is?

Possibly, just a bit, I may be a small tad biased, but I doubt it. It is just too well made. The attention to detail was immpeccable, from all I saw. I mean, the King's Highway is an actual trail over in the forest. Fungus, let me fog you a bit, what exactly makes you disagree?

Pumpkinhead, I will, just let me get the house payment made first, OK? I didn't win our new 100K lottery this week, but 2 out of 5 is OK for a first attempt. And there's always that second chance drawing, giving away new (sorry Sher)FORDS! Anyway, its for education, and is already realizing some the opportunity that may not have occurred otherwise.

One spot Lance, is where Benjamin Martin is taking his children to "Charles-Towne" in the carriage. I'm walking down the street behind the carriage as it passes. The set was made as if one were really there in the 1700's. There is some excellent FX work done with tall ships on the left (which really weren't there, but added later - just incredible) Another is the infamous courtroom steps shot, as Benjamin exits the assembly hall. I had the luck/honor of being on those steps as he came by. A few other little spots too, but if anyone ever has a chance or the opportunity to be an extra in a film (especially done by Devlin/Emmerich) Do it! You'll never forget it.

I almost went down to where they were filming Godzilla near the flatiron building, but they started shooting at 10 pm, and I had to weigh the options:

Watch the news reports of the filming (keep in mind, I wasn't a Centro fan at this time), or take a midnight subway ride into NY. I stayed home and taped the news reports :] I think I made the safe decision (I have a 6 hour tape just filled with news clips and mentionings of the movie, ending with the 1 hour E! special live at the premiere (which I wanted to go to, since MSG isn't that hard to get to, but it was exclusive, and even though I contacted MSG several times within the 2 weeks before it opened, they kept saying "I'm sorry sir, but I have no such listing. I don't know what you're talking about." Yeesh, at least they could have said, "We're not allowed to sell any tickets to this showing to the public," instead of giving me a runaround.

Anywho, Will, I could write a dissertation to answer your question, but the single most bothersome thing to me was, the fact that in order to make Benjamin's atrocities seem 'justified', they just kept making Tavington more and more heinous and evil. There are NO records of such wartime attrocities in the WORLD until World War 2, nevermind the American Revolution...

SWAK back. Thanks for the offer, but not me, no no. Are we allowed to post a wav file of some hilarious laughter? Now would be a good time!

You should have just gone right on down there. I've always wanted to go to MSG. Back a while and take on Sugar Ray. Can you imagine that paycheck? Pound for pound, I think he was the best. Will Smith and Cassius may disagree, though. Seriously though, when they were filming The Patriot here, people were showing up all around trying to glimpse the happenings and some were even taking (or trying to) flash pics while filming was underway. We had to shoo them away.

The justification of Benjamins atrocities, I feel, was the loss of his family. He tried his utmost to stay out of the fight, and you have to commend him for that, but when he loses part of his family, it was just more than he could bear. I seriously doubt Tavington was called The Butcher for poops and giggles. And I think Benjamin personified The Ghost rather well.

Anyway, that was then, and this is now. Believe you me, I've learned that little lesson the hard way several times.
