I would imagine there will be a ton of articles coming out about this movie over the next few weeks and thought it might make more sense to post them all in one place. Here's a nice one:

http://u.dailynews.com/film/articles/0702/18/film01.asp

This is NOT a review - just an article about the film and its producers.

For a gaggle of reviews, may I suggest folks read the collection being assembled over at Rotten Tomatoes:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/EightLeggedFreaks-1114810/

:o)

HEY! That was fun. Thanks Pat! Some folks just don't understand the allure of a good campy flick.

But we do! Don't we, Pat!
"Klaatu, verata, NECKTIE."

I hope it does well. Then they can make a second B-type film. Preferably one with robots. I love robot films.

groovy

Agreed, Goose. SpiderMan has its campy moments too. Look how good that movie is doing! :o)

Which moments would those be, Pat?

(trying to gauge your definition of 'campy').

I'm not getting defensive or anything, I just happen to disagree. Raimi tried to keep it as close to the comic as possible, which is fairly new territory in the comics to hollywood scene.

I think he did an excellent job. Aside from the occassional bad cgi shots, I think he remained very true to the heart of the character, who's very nature was to combat his fear with interjected humor, but without getting actually campy.

Have you seen Spiderman yet, Fungie?
Agent Pat (Agentpat)
07-21-2002, 12:23 AM
Well, SpiderMan, the movie, isn't as "campy" as an old Batman TV episode LOL! But, unlike Superman (the first movie with Christopher Reeve), which didn't have *any* campy scenes IMHO, there were some dopey scenes in SpiderMan. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed the film, but some of those scenes with the "bad guy" (I forget the character name) flying around on that fangled wing of his were just ridiculous. I thought the jetpacks flying through the ceiling/floor in "Minority Report" was ludicrous too. Okay, maybe "campy" is a poor descriptor in these two cases. ;o)

Now, a movie like ELF is *supposed* to be campy. So that won't bother me. I'll be getting exactly what is advertised. It is what it is.

Thanks for pointing the way to that interview, Wayne.

On any given day, my reason for going to the movies could be different. But I do relate to what D.D. was saying. Stepping out of the light and walking down the long, dark theater hallway, I can feel the real world falling away. It's a great sensation to enter some other reality for a few hours. (not to mention basking in the air conditioning, this time of the year)

We've started renting/buying DVDs, using pay per view, but there's nothing like going to the movie theater. I hope that part of our culture doesn't change too fast.

And, by the way, ELF made great entertainment - even for someone like me - probably not part of the target audience.

Glad you liked it

I just got the new issue of "Xposé" today and 8LF made the cover, it also got a five star review which is very rare [even for their beloved "Buffy" and "Angel" reviews lol].

There's an interview with Dean and he rightly says "If you're willing to pay to see a movie called Eight Legged Freaks, you're going to get your money's worth."
Will Finch (Shetan)
07-27-2002, 09:27 PM
Wayne, it was super good, as was the movie, and I got more than my money's worth being that I went to the more inexpensive matinee showing early in the afternoon.
I liked that post Kefla, and I don't think you have anything to worry about the movie theatre culture changing anytime soon. Seeing one on the big screen is as good as it gets!

07-28-2002, 06:08 PM
Kefla & Will, I know what you mean about seeing films on the big screen and escaping "real life" for a couple of hours. I used to spend Sunday afternoons hurtling down mine shafts, time hopping back to 1955 and trapping ghosts in Manhatten Unfortunately, our local cinema hasn;t changed much since then, so I'll have to catch 8LF at a more modern theatre I think!
Will Finch (Shetan)
07-28-2002, 06:48 PM
hmmm..Indiana Jones, Back to the Future Part II and Ghostbusters! F13, I don't think the actual theatres have changed that much. The presentation was very dramatic, the curtains opening, the cartoons, remember the Pink Panther? The specialty cartoons. I remember the first movie I ever saw (actually the first I was allowed to see was The Sound of Music!) I think we contributed at least 2, maybe 3 viewings. The new surround sound to me is the biggest improvement. The Patriot being the one with the most impact.
F13 (F13)
07-31-2002, 07:37 AM
You got it Will! You're right about some cinemas not changing much too. Our "surround sound" consists of one large speaker plonked in front of the screen! Still I suppose the usual sticky floors will give the impression of squished spiders underfoot during 8LF

Actually, I did. And I also tried Mozilla. Eh. I ended up dumping both and re-installing 4.7 (I have it on CD ROM.) I'll probably continue to use it until it doesn't work anymore. When it comes to all the "new and improved" eye candy websites, I say, gimme a static text page with embedded pictures and I'm a happy camper. Not only do such pages load in the blink of an eye, they don't crash my browser either. LOL

Pat --> old-fashioned surfer, and likes it that way.

Pat eschewed the virtues of web design when she stated:
"gimme a static text page with embedded pictures and I'm a happy camper. Not only do such pages load in the blink of an eye, they don't crash my browser either."

NS and crashing. Hmmm... what a shock ;]

NS 7 is surprisingly good.

Btw, NS=AOL now, doesn't matter. Just like you say IE=microsquash. Didn't always (Sprynet started IE). I have a link to a site that has every browser, every version. It's really cool.
Agent Pat (Agentpat)
08-02-2002, 11:28 PM
Hey, if a bonehead web designer neglects to include the appropriate check codes in their web pages for folks who, for whatever reason, use older browsers, they've just lost that potential visitor or customer. I'm not saying all sites should be backwards compatible to the stone age, but I don't think a two year old browser is ancient history either.

And for the record, those sites that crash Netscape on me often crash IE too.

Pat --> uses the K.I.S.S. method of web design! And, at over 1000 unique visitors a day, everybody else can just K.I.S.S. my grits! LOL
Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
08-03-2002, 12:13 AM
And people wonder why I'm so hot in demand for web design. ;-) For the clientele I deal with, it's not about glitz....it's about real stuff, what can it show them and how quickly can it show it to 'em. And yes, I agree...the very same things that crash NS also crash my IE. (Yes, I have to open IE a few times because there's enough boneheaded coders out there that just say "well, get IE 6 and you won't have the problem you're having with IE5"

K.I.S.S. mine too! The solution to a problem is NOT to get everyone on the same brand of item. It's git off yer friggin lazy arse and fix the problem! ;-) Remember, not everyone out there owns PC. (And with my client base, most use Mac)

We're not really bone-heads, we aren't, we aren't! And its The Green Goblin, agent Pat, and I happened to like his wind-surfing wing. Next time the Grits festival comes around here, you two need to put your bathing suits on, jump in the kiddy pool full of them, and hominy it out. :-)

Their solution? "Uhh...we don't know what's wrong. But use IE6 and it won't do that to you."

Umm, what about the 20% who still use Netscape?? I need all the traffic I can git! ;-) How cheap and lazy can a company GET if their tech guys are too lazy to look into a problem and fix it. I could prolly TELL them what the problem was (missing closing table tag in their database templates). Makes me worry how lazy they are when it comes to site security. ;-) Would you trust your CC numbers with a company that's too lazy to fix a simple coding error?? ;-)

(After I nagged them enough, they finally fixed it.)
Fuzzy wuzzy wasn't a bear, he was a (F_U_N_G_U_S)

That 20% is only your site/clientele. The 'realistic' number is more like 8-12%. But I digress.

Remember my peeve about PeeYoo and their lack of background color coding? They had it fixed for about a week, then took out the code again! WTH gives? Grrr...

That's still a lot to be losing out on, Fungus. You of all should know this, since most graphics people use Macs. ;-)

And hey, I'm getting used to sites who just assume default colours are white. ;-) Lotsa grey backgrounds out there. hehehe

Not sure about the shake-a-pudding thing. Did it come in a poptop can?

I thought it was Hunts, but there was a pop top can pudding maker out there, and the vanilla was truly divine!
Remember shake-a-pudding?? It's still on sale, as is Shake-a-cake and shake-a-pancake. (Green's are making 'em now)

I haven't been tempted to try any yet. (me big wimp)

Is it, if you don't specify a background color in the code, the browser will default to white or - in Sheri's case - grey?
Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
08-08-2002, 10:22 AM
YEP! If ya don't specify the colour, it'll go default. My windows theme that I use puts dark grey backgrounds on everything unless directed otherwise. And only newer browsers default to white backgrounds.

My IE, btw, does default to white background, but unless they define the text to be black, I have light grey text. Yes, in NS and IE you can choose a default bg color in the preferences. I've had mine set to gray from the beginning, which is the *original* reason why PeeYoo annoys me even to this day (they've added many, many reasons over the years :]

But they *still* haven't coded a background color, and all their graphics are gifs with white halos, so on the gray bg it looks fugly!

I know, and I would have forgiven PeeYoo a long time ago (especially since I only use the free email, and even then I visit once every week and a half), but PeeYoo now has a long history of indignities it's heaped upon me (and many others in my situation). It's nice to know the roots of where it all started ^-^
