New Line calls up 'Cellular'; Devlin on producer line
May 20, 2002

New Line Cinema is in final negotiations to pick up
the action-thriller "Cellular," which Dean Devlin is
attached to produce. The Electric Entertainment
production, penned by Larry Cohen, had been in
turnaround at Sony. "Cellular" revolves around a young
man who receives a random call on his cell phone from
a woman who has been kidnapped. Knowing she will die
unless he helps her, the man embarks on a desperate
adventure to save her life. Electric Entertainment
originally purchased the "Cellular" spec script for
$750,000. The project was originally brought to
Electric by Lauren Lloyd, who will also produce with
her partner Larry Brezner through their MBST/Lloyd
Prods. New Line production president Toby Emmerich
will oversee the project with production execs Richard
Brener and Keith Goldberg. (Zorianna Kit and Josh
Spector)

I have other ideas for Cellular, how about a young driver finally goes insane and starts killing people who use the cellular phone, while driving. I almost got into a wreck because a woman swerved into my lane with out warning. She didn't even notice me. Yap yap yap yap yap...ah oh wrong forum.

Yeah sounds really cool. I hope he doesn't get cancer from all that phone useage. hehe

I heard a rumor that Cellular is now going forward and is being cast right now. Does anyone have any information about this movie? I am curious to find out what actors are attached.

Scarlett, casting has not been established yet, but the director and lensing locations have been.

As printed in yesterday's Daily Variety:
New Line dials Ellis for 'Cellular' pic
Story centers on random cell phone call from kidnapee
By DANA HARRIS

David Ellis will direct "Cellular" for New Line Cinema.

Ellis, who recently directed "Final Destination 2" for the studio, is in advanced negotiations to helm the pic. Plot revolves around a young man who receives a random call on his cell phone from a woman who has been kidnapped.

Larry Cohen wrote the script. New Line acquired the project in turnaround from Sony this spring.

Electric Entertainment's Dean Devlin and Lloyd Entertainment's Lauren Lloyd produce the pic.

New Line production president Toby Emmerich oversees the project with production execs Richard Brener.

Production on "Cellular" is expected to begin in March on location in Boston and Montreal.

*********& #42;*******

Uh... Far out! (thats an old 70's expression, Jag, which means cool, or "kewl") Thanks Pat! I nominate Bambi to be the Electric guest on set. Then she could tell us all about it.

Smallville, isn't it? New Line is doing one here around Charleston, called "The Notebook".(from a book by Nicholas Sparks) Its good reading, a romance/tragedy, and the first book in quite a while that(besides not being very lengthy thus making it timely possible) held my attention to read it front to back in one sitting. I surprised even myself.

Pat, with D.D. and Electric producing, you Bostonians are in for a treat!

Hey Will, I grew up on "The Brady Bunch" -- Groovy and Far Out are found in my vocabulary. :o)

PS: Received your nice token of appreciation the other day in snail mail. While I accept, you do realize the CD was meant to be a gift... No payment was necessary.

This goes for everyone -- yes, you too Dean :o) -- If I send something to ya -- it's free, gratis with no further action required -- period.

-=JAG!

So what's the deal Dean? This film begins lensing in Boston in March, right? Who's starring in it? Will it be Ledger? It'd be nice to get the info here first for once, instead of seeing the scoop printed on some other site somewhere.

Signed, Electric/Centropolis fan, Agent "pouty face" Pat ;o)

Will Finch (Shetan)

Dean, Dean, ...no,no,no....Gene,Gene the Dancing Machine! Sorry pouty face, got carried away. But yes, I think that would be a good idea also. I have other questions too. A lot of things in the movie industry seem to happen last minute, or even secretive, or whatever. What are the reasons? Is it just the rushed schedules? Stock linked, or something to that effect? Worries of another co. doing something similar and getting beat out of the starting gate? I'm not really complaining, just curious. The movie industry has helped us out more than once. First Dean with The Patriot, my sons Sony Playstation2 with his earnings from Radio, and my Mom had the day of her life getting to meet James Garner on the set of The Notebook.

Sheri, I like the Viking kitties, My-Ra likes the Samurai kitties the best.

Hop-scotching back to New Line a bit, there was this great article in our paper about Nick Cassavetes, the director of The Notebook being filmed here. Mr. Devlin, you can relay to your contacts at N.L. that he's doing a great job. The man's a born leader with a smile for everyone and really gets in there with his actors to entice and draw out of them what he's looking for. Ryan Gosling's (I think he's from Canada Sheri and Starr :-) in it as well as Gena Rowlands, Sam Shepherd, and Rachel McAdams. Without going into tooo much detail, there's some 1940's scenes with lots of period vehicles. Engines revving, tires squealing, too cool! I've seen several people involved in The Patriot, too. For several minutes I got to stand right next to Rachel, and you know Jag, OMG, for a few moments I think I was beginning to get a little twitterpated myself, but after all, she is the cutest quail in the whole covey!!!

*and* I had the thrill of seeing the full length trailer for Cellular at a benefit screening of The Notebook (wonderful love story, highly recommended, go see it and don't forget your tissues)
You know how at the end of a trailer in the theatre you hear people whispering to each other and little comments and a little buzz? Well at the end of the Cellular trailer, the entire audience were chitter chatter, chitter chatter. It was cool. Some guy behind me said "Wow, a movie about cell phones! It's going to be goooood!"
