Mr. Devlin -

I am an avid fan of the Battletech universe and just happen to be a classically trained actor with an MFA living in Los Angeles. What is the best way to stay on top of casting for this film (though I realize that step is probably still a long ways off)? I would love to send a headshot and resume to yourself or the casting director when appropriate.

Best Wishes!

The better idea is to work with your agent in getting you work. You should've discussed this with your agent first because your career is really what the both of you, as a team, are all about, and when Casting Directors let agents know that parts are up for this, she/he'll know and will see if the descriptions asked for resemble you, then will recommend you for the audition.

Presenting yourself this way, on this BBS, is not really a professional way to go about being considered. Actually it can hurt your chances in a big way. Leave it for a while then send your 8X10 and resume along with a generic cover letter addressed to the appropriate person in the company.

BTW, you should be doing this anyway to all production companies, letting them know you exist and what you look like. Talk to your agent, and possibly a freelance Casting Director about what is the professional way to present the first impression of you to a company.

In the olden days actors used to bribe producers and Casting Directors with presents and self-merchandising. Actually, all they wanted , and still want, was a brilliant performance at the worst possible few minutes in an actor's life - the (#&$@%) audition.

Well, I have to say that you present a somewhat idealized version of the actor/agent relationship, but I appreciate and understand your insight. As a producer myself, I get the bribery sent my way on occasion. Was just hoping for possible back door information on who the casting director would be and who the appropriate person to send a headshot to at Electric would be.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's been the standard professional way of doing business for the past 28 years I've been in the biz.

It may be the way to deal with micro-independant filmmakers out on the fringe of the industry, but not how you deal with mainstream commercial (professional) filmmakers.

There are some back-door ways, but they don't get you all that far anymore. This is because it has been over-used by film dilletants, fringe-dwellers and wannabes, and the backstage door has now been locked. There ain't no way to get into the inner circle except through the front door.

The better back door is through the hollywood film festival.

Well how about you two producers get busy and produce something over on this side of the country. Its been awhile since anything came along and I just think we're overdue. Its a wonderful area for filming and we're always grateful for the extra money. I'm tellin ya if things don't change soon, I'm gonna have ta dust off the gloves and earn some at the Plex!
