Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have made the first direct detection of the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a star outside our solar system. Their unique observations demonstrate that it is possible with Hubble and other telescopes to measure the chemical makeup of alien planet atmospheres and to potentially search for the chemical markers of life beyond Earth. The planet orbits a yellow, Sun-like star called HD 209458, located 150 light-years away in the constellation Pegasus.

Btw, to answer your question, oh Fungal one (and trying to keep in line with the scientific nature of this thread)

A white horse isn't really pure white, unless the pigment around his eyes and mouth are pink. (Pink skin, as opposed to black) What most people think of as white horses are technically GREY. That is, they are born dark (almost black) and turn greyer as they age. So in theory, a "white" horse CAN have white socks. (Many do) If you look closely, you'll see 'em.

*donning his best Jeff Goldblum impression*

So are you trying to say this new life is what... equine? I don't get it, please explain...

still doesn't answer if the FLYING horsie has horsie socks...

btw, sheri, pink skin with white fur is defined as albino in pretty much EVERY species of animal :]

has anybody here ever seen an albino ameoba?

Fungus, deary, all pink skin does NOT an albino make. Cremello colored horses have pink skin and look white, yet aren't albinos. Few-spot appaloosas have white fur and pink skin, yet, they aren't albinos. (They carry the genes for appaloosa, but they themselves don't have to have the spotting traits) A true white horse will have the pink skin. True white horses are rare. So most likely the flying horsie is a grey, thus he could indeed have horsie socks. Duhhhhhh.

As for the "new life"...you've got a hunk of rock rotating around another big hunk of rock. Life? I think we're a long ways from finding that out yet. Look at how many other big hunks of rock are rotating around our sun, that don't have life on 'em. ;-)

And just WHY is the flying horsie "most likely" gray? You have no evidence to back that up! I mean, what's rarer, a true white horse, or a horse with wings?

:]

and Sheri, how many alien astronomers are using equipment millions of times more advanced than the hubble, looking at our planet and going "just another hunk of rock..."

:]

A horse with wings is rarer, at least on this planet. But who knows, even Mars they say had more water on it than Earth -at one time.

And can a lizard man or an ape run faster than a horse? Why yes Sheri, if you've seen Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, and care to nab his "trick of the trade" from the making of DVD. THAT I did enjoy! Hook up that 100 foot mat to the back of your Nova and off we go!

Fungus, that wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Well, if there IS life over there, we don't have any way of getting there, so why should it concern me? ;-) We have enough problems of our own on this hunk of rock to deal with. hehehe And if those alien technologies were advanced enough to come HERE, they'd be here by now. Then again, maybe they have been here, and didn't think us interesting enough to show themselves to us. "Uhhh, Mable, let's skip this planet and go on to the next one. There's no intelligent life down there." ;)

Now, flying white horsies...THAT interests me. ;-)

Yep, some day. I *am* on the edge of town, with a 1/2 acre lot, so I'm *kinda* on a ranch. But not technically. I guess it's the next best thing, cuz ranches cost mega moolas which I don't have.

KEWL!

Btw, I brought Cruiser in the house today to thaw the poor guy out. It's -25 C outside today, and he was one frosty pony. He loved it in the house so much he didn't want to go back outside. LOL Laid down in the living room floor and had a nice nap, he did.
