Our state's first power station to generate electricity by burning landfill gas -a principle of Touchstone Energy- is up and running. Kudos to Santee Cooper and our own Gov. Hodges for throwing the switch and backing this worthwhile project. Methane is a renewable resource and the customers for the power are going to have to pay a small premium at least for the time being, but proceeds will help fund future renewable energy projects. Thunderdome?!!!

Two hips and a Huzzah to alternative energy sources.

Our state's DABBLING with wind power right now.
Needs to do a bit more than DABBLE is ya ask me.

(Here's to hoping someone comes up with a renewable substitute for gasoline, retrofittable onto any and all gas powered automobiles)

They've had LOTS of alternatives. Gotta keep the oil companies from getting their grubbies on the patents though. ;-) They buy 'em and shelve 'em. Bad fer their business. hehehe

I'm thinking of a man powered rocket that requires nothing but a match! I am secretly working with Taco Bell on the specifics of it...

Sheri...oil companies aren't the only ones invested in gas...We will see little to no regulation for SUV's.. The US government is making a good bit of money in gas taxes as well. So it has a lot in stake with oil too. There are some out there who speculate that we are in Afganistan because of the country to the north, not sure of the name. But rumor is that this country has the third largest (untapped?) oil reserve in the world, and the United States wants that oil. They wish to run a pipe line through the countries....I have heard simmilar rumors as to why we were involved in the wars in the former Russian rebublics of a few years back...pipelines.

Regardless of the rumors as to why we may or may not be interested in getting into certain countries..there is a lot of money in oil...both for industry as well as government. Which is why I do feel that there is always a lot more to what we see than we really know.

One of the rumors is that the vice president had former oil ties, and that the company he formerly head, and still has monies in, is in for bids for the reserves involved with the Afganistan conflict...I guess I need to get the full scoop on that conspiracy theory...sounds very interesting.

To Fungus... Sounds like the makings of a super hero.. Anal man, and his top secret weapon, the rectum rocket.

BAHAHAHHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAH

rectal rocket, indeed! *giggle*

Maurine...Canada is sitting on a LARGE deposit of crude oil too, but until the middle east dries up, they won't buy it from us. :-\

A few stats:

Russia is now the largest oil exporter. That's why gas prices have dropped so much, because OPEC isn't the big kid on the block anymore.

The US has enough oil reserves to meet the world demand for oil for over 20 years. Of course, if it comes down to that, the prices are going to go thru the roof (for foreign countries. Not so much for the US since it's domestic oil).

As for the Afghanistan rumor, just ignore them. How many people on this very bbs (you included, Jen) were calling for some action by the US, against the Taliban? Not to mention Bin Laden (here's a zinger: Bin Laden was responsible for no less than 5 major terrorist acts against the US during Clinton's presidency. EVERY time, Clinton said "he will pay for his actions." Yet, Clinton spent MORE on trying to sue Bill Gates and break up Microsoft than he ever spent going after Bin Laden.)

Sheri, I get this really odd impression that when someone finally goes to tap those canadian oil reservers, that there's going to be one stubborn moose there guarding the area (ala the Poland Springs commercials :]

As for the rectal rocket... well... sounds painful. We'll leave that as the 'working title' :Þ

I wasn't saying that it was the only reason, or that we shouldn't be there, just that there may be a few more reasons for us being there than why we are there. ;)

Also, as to reserves of oil, it shouldn't matter. Like Sheris said, and I stated with oil taxes, there are alternatives, but there is too much money to be made with it, not to mention that it is a great way to control the people. Any of the other technologies would free people in large part from one of the biggest economic sources of bondage, travel costs. It would also mean greater travel freedom if costs for fuel, or the need for fuel, were not kept.

I firmly believe that there are some very good technologies being employed by various governments, ours at least. One could argue that it is not right, but then again look at the behavior of the average person, and then visualize the mayhem that would ensue if a bunch of kids carrened into the moon during a drunk driving flight. All the mess with the gravity and oceans and such. hehehe Of course, I am hinting at a bit more than just fuel alternatives with regards to these technoloies. I have a firm belief that the bulk of real UFO sightings are of US and other governments secret experimental craft, which I believe are being used for every sort of purpose, including monitoring US citizens....After all, why else would a craft over 50 foot across, being black in color, and having three wings equally spaced(the wings were flat and rectangular in shape) comming from a central circular body with a domed underside; be parked off I-45 right across from a microwave transmitter on our side of the town? It is over there quite often, and has been seen thruought the city of Houston, and they(the operators) understand what people say form their cars as they drive by and see them from the freeway. The craft was completely silent, and had no visible form of conventual propultion. It went up into the clouds after my "holy $h!t, that's a UFO!" Man, somebody is lucky to take that puppy off the base. Found out that people have seen the exact same craft around town on clear nights as well, followed a friend for about a block then shot straight up.
