Dean,
As everyone seems to be going to Australia to film, will you be returning, and why.

and... are they up to scratch production office-wise?
Dean Devlin
03-20-2002, 03:28 PM
Australia is a wonderful place to shoot a film. Not only is it less expensive to make a film there, but the craftsmen who work on your films, from the crew to your cast, are all excellent and extremely talented.

I have no doubt that at some time soon, I'll be making a film there. I just don't know which one yet.

-Dean Devlin

Dean,
Do you just write and produce your own work, or do you invite submissions that you look at, with the idea toward producing?

- Mike Wilde

See? Why do people think they can get around it? I'm not trying to be mean here or anything, but we get people a lot here asking Mr. D a question, which he's gracious enough to answer, then as soon as there's a response, right away the poster starts asking about having him read a script.

Are these people not aware of the fact that you can hire an agent, on COMMISSION, who will submit their work to pretty much every studio they feel might be interested in it, including Electric Entertainment?

Honestly people, there's no shortcut!
Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-21-2002, 09:30 PM
Oh c'mon, Fungie, lighten up a little. You know Mr. D's pretty special in the way he runs things and listens to people. No harm in asking is there? This IS the 00's now ya know. ;-) If it weren't for his openess on this bbs, I might not have had the courage to try it myself. :-) I did go through the proper channels when the time came, and I'm grateful to Dean and Marc for taking time to look it over and give me an honest critique on it. It's helped me immensely.

I'm still working on my second script, which HOPEFULLY will be ready this summer. If I ever get a long enough break in between all my paying work here to get time to finish it, that is. And when it is done, and polished, and ready to promote/pitch, I'll have the courage and confidence to do so, because Dean and co took the time to make my first time extra encouraging for me. And yes, they'll likely be one of many places that I pitch it to. I have several prodcos in mind, as well as some independents too. All this because of this forum!
Guys, Guys.

Actually, I never asked him to read a script.

As Dean has mainly produced his own work. I wondered as many do. Whether he looks at other work to produce.

Don't jump to conclusions too soon. There are too many Readers out there that will do that for us already.
Sheri,
I can see where Fungus is coming from, and he does have a point.

In order to learn their way, newbies try to take shortcuts because they have been taught the business of screenwriting in a nut-shell. "You do this, then this, then this, and this happens". Oops, where did Act Two, or Plan to Battle go?? (depending on your school)

Many of us, when we started out, had to feel around in the dark. Most of us bumped our knees into the coffee table. Then there were the lucky ones who had someone in the room who knew where the light switch was.

Some writer/producers I've worked with prefer to produce only their own work. It's better to ask than not, for the benefit of other writers (newbies included).
Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-22-2002, 09:27 AM
Good point, WSAI.
Dean,
I was just told of a new release (comedy) about a guy who receives a watch that can slow down/stop time. Didn't you write something along those lines a few years ago?
And the Oscar goes to... (F_U_N_G_U_S)
03-24-2002, 10:26 PM
It's called "Clockstoppers". I wouldn't call it a comedy so much as a more 'geared for kids' type movie (pg 13 rating).
Thanks Fungus.

Is Clockstoppers Dean's or the new one?

Sounds Familiar, though.
Dean,
Since I'm here 17 hours in the future... there's a new studio complex being built in Melbourne, Australia that will be state-of-the-art. They're looking at end of this year for completion. A new script consultancy may be moving there to assist the U.S. producers with prod office and writing staff, etc., and to train Oz writers in US-style.
Dean Devlin
03-25-2002, 11:04 AM
No, I had nothing to do with Clockstoppers, however, it was directed by Johnathon Freaks (Star Trek), who's a friend and someone that we're developing a film project with, and it was shot by John Bartley, who was the director of photography for both THE VISITOR and EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS. It looks like the movie's going to rock!

-Dean Devlin

Wow, six degrees of Centropolis/Electric.

I think The Visitor's saying should have been, "All Hollywood's Connected"

;-)

Dean is friends with Frakes?! Awesome -- the guy rocks -- both as an actor and director. His talent shines in the Star Trek episodes and movies he directs.

Good to hear there's talks about working projects with him in the future. :o)

-=JAG!

PS: Heard Frakes is working on a "Twilight Zone" project.. wonder if this is the project in question. Hmm...

Eight-legged Frakes??

Oh, the hell you guys put a visual writer through. The pain of that mental picture burns deep.

Lets hope that no-one from Nina Saxon's or CRC hears about this. Could be their first typo in 20 years.

How can I send a message that will not be displayed as if on a billboard (so that everyone can read it)?

Is it possible to obtain Dean Devlin's direct e-mail address (not private, of course, but some sort of fan mail)? Although he is very busy, would it be possible to get a photo of him with an autograph?

Hi Strawberry, you might get to see Dean on the promotional tour for Eight Legged Freaks.

Now there's an idea, signed pics of Dean with other Electric merchandise at their online "store". Or put them on ebay. I found one of Kari Wuhrer, the upcoming star of Eight Legged Freaks. Lo and behold, even found one of my uncle Albert. "Battleing Bert" they used to call him.

Seems as if Australia is really up and coming. The star of Dean and Rolands movie The Patriot, Mel Gibson, has substantially helped finance a new theatre at the Nat. Inst. of Dramatic Arts.

Will -- you twitter-patted bunny -- I had that same thought a few days ago ... would be great to see an EE online store.

Signed posters, tshirts, caps, backpacks..etc. Hopefully, that's in the works, or TPTB at Electric will consider it when the time is right.

-=JAG!
(Proud owner of the Centropolis Interactive Tshirt, and signed Centropolis poster)

I just suppose, Dean won't give his one out, lol... ;-)
I caught Renee O'connor (Gabrielle from Xena) wearing a Visitor cap recently. Unless the New Zealand Gov expects all tourists/legal aliens to wear one.

A few days ago, I was intrigued by an article in National Geographic Mag.(March)It had a close up of a strawberry on the cover imbedded with little diamonds. Now, weird world, the very next day, had a call to be in a local commercial for a jewelry chain! Yippeee!! The extra will always come in handy.

Though she prefers to agree with you...and I prefer her to stop calling me by some other guy's name whenever we meet.

I have enough trouble trying to sell under my *own* name after having to use pen names for the last 12 years.
