I read on one of the numerous movie news sites that you did some screening recently of Independence Day and mentioned that you and Roland had turned in a scipt for the 2nd ID4 movie. The article also said that you had stated that eventhough the studio, Fox I would assume, showed a lot of interest, Roland and you did not think that the script was good enough to make ID4 2 off of. Is that true? Is it now on the back burner again? Please say it ain't so. I was so excited when you announced that you and Roland finally had an idea for a sequel, and want so badly to see you guys work together again. Especially on a sequel to ID4. Thanks for any clarrification you can give us fans.

If it's about Electric and it's in the news, then it's probably in the "In the News" section. And it is. Check the top story on the list (at least it is at the time of this post)

Yes, unfortunately, it's true. We didn't write a script, but we did complete a long outline for a script. And while it had a ton of very cool stuff in it, it wasn't good enough to be a proper sequel to ID4. We're so grateful to the people who loved and supported the original that we didn't want to do a sequel that wasn't up to it. After spending countless hours working on the project, Roland and I felt that this is probably the kind of movie that shouldn't have a sequel. Some films just don't lend themselves to sequels. But, I'll always keep my mind open and if a great idea comes to us...

Until then, I think we'll just move on to more original fare....

Thanks,

-Dean Devlin

ID4 was a very good movie. One of the things I cannot stand about the Movie Making Industry is their desire to make an endless amount of sequels that do not measure up to the originals.
While I am interested in seeing a sequel to ID4, I can wait forever if necessary, for a very cool script.
I'm over it already. Just try not to make any more movies with giant killer bugs! OK. Yuck!

Thanks for the confirmation. It's great to know that you wouldn't feel good about doing a sequel unless it was up to the high standards of the original, and actually lent to the overall story.
That just makes it that much more frustrating that MGM screwed you guys over, and us fans, and ever getting to see Roland and your 2nd and 3rd planned parts to Stargate. I have to admit that I think that they have done a very good job with the series, but I would trade all that for the Stargate trilogy that you had planned.
I am still very excited for all the original films, like Cellular, that we have coming from you. Hopefully, we will get to see another original co-production from you and Roland soon too. I miss the Centropolis zeplin!

How does Fox feel about your decision, Mr. D? Btw, it might be just my opinion, but I do feel the topic covered in ID4 is DEFINETLY broad enough that a single movie doesn't do it justice. I mean, just the fact that the ship was in Nevada for half a century shows that there's a lot more to the story than we've been presented with.

You mean something like "Episode I, II and III" for ID4...? ;)
