Question for Mr. Devlin on the three hour version of this film.

Hey, I was wondering about the rumor I keep hearing about the three hour version of Stargate.

Apparently, I keep hearing all over the internet that the original film spanned for about 3 hours but had to be drastically cut in order to meet with the industry standards. One claimed that it was reported in a magazine back in '94 and another claimed to have seen it, where everything (from anagonists to the main storyline) is actually drastically different from the theatrical cut.

I have no idea who to believe except the original creators, in which you are one of the two in the original Stargate creative team. I was wondering if such a version ever existed and, if it did, will it ever see the light of the day?

Well, there never was a three hour version. However, there was a longer version than the theatrical release which you can get on Laser Disk (remember those?) and on DVD. This includes an openning scene with RA at the beginning of the film, some additional scenes of the men in the sand storm and more footage of RA with his strange souless children. I can't remember the complete running time, but I'm pretty sure, even with all the scenes restored, we were still well under 3 hrs.

The laserdisc specs runtime says 131 minutes. The "official" runtime for the theatrical version is 119 minutes, so there's only about 12 minutes of extra footage added for the directors cut.

I guess a three hour version seemed too good to be true after all (I wouldn't mind it being that long, to be honest).
