Recently I watched, for the very first time, the original Japanese version of Gorjira, and I have to say it is one of the best foreign movies I've ever seen. Yeah, the special effects are quite dated, by the horrors of nuclear war are just as applicable today, as they were back then. The acting was amazing. Very good actors, and a shame that the human aspect of the franchise was sufficated later on for the monsters, but hey...

Today I put in D&E's Godzilla 98 and once again, I find myself just as WOWed by it as I was when I saw it for my birthday way back when. Goodness... Almost... freaking 10 years ago... Coom 2008! Amazing how time flies...

To be honest, with the exception of the original movie, D&E's film drawfed other Godzilla films in both effects, story, and scope. Frankly the newer Godzillas that I've seen trapesing around of late, or awful. Cool fights, but that is about it. Kind of reminds me of those cheesy 70's Kung Fu movies.

So it still baffles me that Godzilla 98 didn't do as well as projected. I mean we could gripe about little things, but in the end... wasn't Godzilla Fandom that killed the titanicular beast?

We've seen such fandom force film makers into hard decisions before, such as Hulk, of which not only incorperated comic book strip cut scenes into the movie, but for the sake of whining fans, kept those awful purple shorts on the big green guy. I understand paying homage to a legendary hero, but there are things that just don't work in film.

We also saw similar resentment in the Stephen Sommer's movie, Van Helsing, where people griped about the lack of homage and likeness to any of the real Universal treats, that they were suppose to be paying homage too... as well as the inclusion of a Paramount monster, Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde... Of course Van Helsing had a LOAD of other issues, regarding plot, character development, over abused CGI, a score that keeps on giving regardless of what is going on screen. Still though it was a fun movie...

I guess it is difficult to make a movie based on a well known and loved icon...
