In case any of ya are wonderin what color that horse on the left is, it's a blue roan overo pinto. That is, his base coat color is blue roan. Blue roan is a black horse that's roaned out. (White hairs specked throughout) They call it "blue roan" for some silly reason. hehehe His pinto pattern is of the overo type. That is, more of a "splashed white" pattern than the more patchwork type of pattern. (Horse people separate pinto coloring patterns into two main types...overo and tobiano. But then there's toveros (crosses between the two types and Sabinos. Don't ask me how they can tell the difference! heehee I can tell overos and tobianos apart easily, but the rest, oy vey.)

The horse on the right is a chestnut overo.

Wary beautiful, Sheri! I Like it!

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-06-2002, 10:06 AM
Wayne...you don't wanna know! LOL Let's just say, it damn near took me longer to scan it than it did to draw it! ;-) Scanned in 6 sections, then digtitally put it all back together. And I had to be very very careful when scanning, as pastel isn't very secure....it'll move if anything touches it too much. In fact, I did have a couple little smudges to fix after I scanned it. Nothing major though. I wish I had a really high quality digital camera for scanning these big pastels. Or, a really BIG flatbed scanner. hehehe

Btw, I just got hired to illustrate a children's book. About porcupines. 29 pages long. $30/per illo. I figgered that rate was rather low, thinking of the detailed drawings I normally do, but then she sent me her package with the porcupine story, as well as a book she'd had published from before with a different artist about Moose, and heck, if that's all she's expecting, this'll be an EASY job! My kids could draw as good as her previous illustrator. Well, my art students anyway.

Goosie, you'll like these books...written by a First Nations lady who has her M. Ed. for children's education. Particularly special needs kids. She's from the Yukon. Kewl. Someone gave her my name when she was in the city for an educator's seminar of some sort. She called me up the other night, hired me on the spot based on whatever my referrer told her about my work, and sent me this package. Should be neat! Too bad the book wasn't about horses though. hehehe Or wolves. Mebbe she'll be doing one on wolves soon. THAT would be a fun one to illo.

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-06-2002, 06:00 PM
LOL!! Neato idea, Fungie. Although, I think there ARE some sites out there like that already. They call it "modern art". ;-)

Sher, I just thought scanners were bigger in Canada

Do you use any kind of "fixing" spray to keep the colors from smudging? When I used to use Pastels, I would even borrow hairspray to use on the drawing if I had to send it by post, and it would usually arrive at it's destination intact.

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-07-2002, 08:42 AM
I put a little bit of fixative on it, but not too much. Pastels fade if too much is put on. I'd prefer to ship them framed, that way they have some protection. They have got to be about the most touchy medium there is. Oils and acrylics are the toughest! hehehe But pastels have such a nice richness to them, it's hard to resist using them. :-)

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-07-2002, 08:44 AM

I used to draw a bit in my youth, and found I really liked using a combination of pastels and coloured pencils. I almost got accepted for an Animation course run by Sullivan/Bluth [who made "All Dogs go to Heaven"] until they cut the numbers they wanted to do the course. Life could have been different; I could be an out of work animator now!

I crammed all my drawings into a portfolio which I used to drag around various art colleges. Alas [or hurrah!], said portfolio is now missing!

The only thing I can find is my first Pastel 'n' Pencil pic, which I entered in a competition to design a magazine cover.

Bear in mind that:

[a] it was my first attempt
[b] I was only 15
[c] I did get better at it!

I'm not sure! Once I got interested in computers, I saw web design as the next progression. I still do a few scribblings occasionally though!

Rick Santillo (Rjs)
03-14-2002, 07:36 AM
Wayne

That was an excellent pic my friend. Am I the only one who can't draw on this board?

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-14-2002, 08:21 AM
heheh Hey Wayne, *I* do web design. But I still do art too! I like to think them linked. Graphic design is an art form, after all. No reason why ya can't still have some fun with them in between jobs. I know I'd certainly love to see more!

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)

Rick, you play a far more important role. You're an art supporter and appreciator! Without people like you, there wouldn't be any artists.

Thanks Rick, I think being an all-round nice guy counts as a talent

Sher, I've seen your sites and very impressive they are too. I don't know how you manage it all on top of looking after children and ponies!

Actually, I am just l-a-z-y. I wish I could be more motivated, that way I'd be churning out drawings, and have the 3 Amigos site well finished at this point!

Rick Santillo (Rjs)

Very good point Sheri, I didn't think of it that way.

Wayne, so where does that leave me? lol
Thanks for the compliment.

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)

03-17-2002, 11:08 AM
Thanks Will! And Rick, heed Will's advice... it sometimes seems that nice guys do finish last.

Here's a question for the girls... do you prefer "nice" guys or rebels with a dangerous edge?

Sheri Gordon (Sheri)
03-17-2002, 02:50 PM
See, that's where we don't make any sense. We like the rebels with a dangerous edge for excitement, but when it comes to plans for settling down, we want the nice guys.

Kinda like how men prefer their women wild, but not wild with just ANYONE. hehehe
