JUST when you thought it was gonna be a boring day at school....

NNNNNNEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWW...

There go the fire trucks screaming past the school towards the airport...
(we are only about 5 blocks from the Saskatoon International Airport)
9-11 in our minds.. (and my thought that SS ,a friend, lives in that direction as well!) 4 of us ran to the instructor's office window that faces the airport and saw the billowing smoke.. we looked at Rodger (our Instructor) who threw us the Digital Video Camera the school had and said "GO!"

Grabbing our coats and running for the car we made haste to the airport when upon getting closer my first thought was "HOLY! *****, The WHOLE TERMINAL is on fire!"

We drove up right behind the 'Global TV' truck as Chris with the camera jumped out and continued filming..
We made our way through the traffic behind the Global camera guy trying to avoid the police who were all over the place.

We managed to get about half way through the restricted area before the police noticed us and hollared at us to get back.. so the 3 of us did .. distracting the officer so our camera guy Chis could get closer to to get good shots.. WEeelllll.. good shots he got!

He followed along behind the local media camera people and got GREAT footage managing to get 2-300 feet from the actual terminal that was on fire!
Meanwhile we are talking to people/officials getting information and interviewing officers like reporters..

Our Instructor came to check on us on the lunch break (when he could finally get away) at which time he informed us to make sure we get everything we need before we leave!
(he's a REALLY cool guy)

OVERALL.. we got some AMAZING footage of the fire and a LOT of good information.. (Ohhh it's gonna be a while before they fix THAT mess!.. VERY bad fire but nobody was injured.. Thank The Goddess)

Guess all 4 of us students involved know what our final video editing project is gonna be about
(we have A+ material to work with)

Just thought to share my exciting day, and will let you all know how I/we do on the VERY impromptu project.

Sharen/Starr

WOW!!!!

Final video editing project, INDEED!

It reminds me of the scene in G98 where Harry Shearer's character is desperately looking for some big story, and his secretary sees Godzilla go past the window....."I....think...Your...story just walked past the window, sir.." hehehehe

Thank gawd no one was hurt! How'd they get everyone out?? Did they say what started the fire?

Acording to the people we interviewed as far as they could tell they were putting tar on the roof and the tar caught fire (hence the thick black smoke)

the people who were IN the terminal at the time of the incident said that they called for an immediate evacuation of the building and were pushing everyone out the doors to safety.

I think after the 9-11 scare.. everyone listens when they say evacuate a building IMMEDIATLY!

As far as they knew at the time we were there (for a couple HOURS) nobody was seriously injured.
a few scrapes etc. but thats all.

Other than thats tis all I know right now.
will keep posted but you might wanna check the 6 pm news to see if I am on it

Kewlio

Although, I hardly think our wee little airport would be a target for terrorism anytime soon. One advantage of living in a wee city in the middle of the Great White North. hehehe

Tar, huh? Okay, who dropped the ciggie butt on morning coffee break? ;-)

Thursday, March 14, 2002

SASKATOON (CP) _
Hundreds of people were evacuated from the old terminal building at the John G. Diefenbaker International Airport after a fire broke out on the roof shortly before noon Thursday.

Flights to both Calgary and Edmonton were cancelled while fire crews brought the blaze under control.

No injuries were reported.

The terminal, which was under renovation, sustained heavy smoke and water damage, said Leo Barrett, assistant fire chief in Saskatoon.

``We worked for hours trying to contain the fire to the roof area and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the terminal,'' Barrett said.

By late afternoon, airport officials were allowed back inside and they planned to meet late Thursday to discuss reopening the area.

``Each company now will be looking at their facility and see how long it will take them to get up in servicing,'' said Bill Restall, a spokesman for the airport authority. ``Based on those decisions we will make a consensus decision and move forward.''

Fire officials believe the blaze was started accidentally by some welders working on the roof.

``Construction crews were doing some welding which ignited foam insulation,'' Barrett said. ``They did try to extinguish it with a hand extinguisher but the fire spread and was across a wide area of the building very quickly.''

We had similar happen to our new big name Hotel in our prestigeous Downtown area last year.

Welders, Insulation & Tar.

If memory serves, they said there was some 10 million in damages.

"Serves 'em right" thought I.
The Hotel People demanded that the city councel change our well working one way street system in the Downtown area.
STILL causing accidents.
