Well... I got my letter in the mail and didnt get accepted. Im going on a downward spiral and dont know what to do next. I dont want to do web design my whole life. I was hoping to major in graphic design and try to break into a movie company... Possibly work my way up from concept artist or something... Everytime i got something in my grasp and can almost taste it. Someone dropkicks me and i lose my chance...

Um, Frank? I have to say, not to be cliche, but don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I applied to F.I.T. in NY, and while they said "yeah, sure", I didn't get the financial aid I needed because of their strict requirements. So... I wound up not going to college at all. BIG mistake.

Don't put all your hopes and dreams into one tiny little box. They're not meant for that. Get a few dozen rubbermaid totes, poke a few thousand holes in each, and watch your dreams break free of even that :]

I'm sure there are other colleges that are at LEAST as good as the one you applied to, so don't fret :]

You can look into Cooper Station (or is it Square?) in NY. They have an awesome graphic art/fine arts program (they're an 'art' college).

Its not that. I screwed around in highschool. The only way i will get into a real college was with the program im in. Since that didnt go well i have nothing to fall back on. Movie companies dont look at community colleges...

Does the US have things called Student Loans? Work your way into it, Frank. So you don't go this year. Save up your pennies and go another year. Get your high school diploma, or go back to better your grades in it.

If you keep telling yourself what you *can't* do, you won't do it. Movie companies look for people who say "Can do!" ;-) I know ya can do it dude.

Btw, for what it's worth, Frank....I don't have anything more than a high school diploma. My folks couldn't afford to put me through college, and with a family to support, there's just no way I could do it on my own. BUT....I stuck it out and taught myself everything I need to know. I'm always learning new things. It's to the point now where I've been called on to TEACH some of the very classes I would have taken, had I gone to college back when I was younger. So stick to it dude. If you want something bad enough, it'll come, sooner or later.

Uh Frank-

Spielberg went to LONG BEACH STATE before he got into a major college.

You know what Long Beach State is?

You guessed it. A community College.

Chris
The FOX plant

Yea i guess your right Chris... But look through my eyes. Im in RI... Thee smallest stain on the map of the US. I mean there are farms in Texas bigger than my state... It is next to impossible to get your work noticed unless you have connections. I have nothing. I emailed all my favorite companies offering free work!! Just to get my work noticed. Out of like 20 companies 2 responded. Centropolis and Road Runner records. So now if your looking through my eyes you see yourself... No direction... No idea of what to do next. Living in this state where everyone of your friends are gone... To school... To the beginning of their lives... and im here on my computer cranking out design noone will ever use... Now looking through the eys of a person in the suit... if your in the movie industry and your looking for an employee your not going to give a 21 year old who may be able to do it but doesnt have anything on paper a chance... I was walking in the city one day. I saw someone that looked familiar. He was this guy i knew from highschool... Smart... Smarter than me if i remember correctly and now he is homeless... Living on the street. I just had flashes in my mind hoping that i didnt end up like that. I promised i wouldnt end up like that. Although i hate anything that has to do with the military it seems like its my only option to not end up like that...

Gee, sounds like the place I grew up in. Biggest aspirations of folk in my hometown? Get knocked up and collect the biggest welfare check.

NO THANKS.

I left that place, both physically and academically.

My point being.....things are what you make of them. Everyone lives in the middle of nowhere, compared to somebody else. Take charge. Do something. Be heard. Make them listen. Stand out in the crowd! If you build it, they will come, as the saying goes. I'm finding that to be very true. It doesn't matter where you are or where you're from. If you have the drive to succeed, you eventually will. Stick to it. Something will come along. :-)

You don't know what will happen until you do something about it.

Frank, I went to college, I have two degrees.

One in Film and One in TV.

For the past 11 years, I have been a resort guide at Universal here in Orlando. I talk about films every day, and I am close to TV productions, and have been in a few.

Other than that, I write.

I want to do other things, I never thought I would be in tours for 11 years, but, I am currently trying to figure out what I am going to do...

I know how you feel, but remember, you won't go anywhere feeling sorry for yourself.

Chris
The FOX plant

Well....in the interim...

1) Get a job. Get some money coming in somehow

2) Network. Find out what you want and the various places you can get it.

3) Start stashin money aside for tuition of whatever college it is you want to attend. (They WILL eventually take you on...as an adult student. I think it's once you hit 25 they accept ya as long as you show them da money. Least, thats' how it is here in Canada.)

Remember...you can't start at the top. Gotta work your way up so that you know everything that is involved in what you want to do for a living. Plus, along the way you learn a few things about what you do and don't really need in order to achieve your career goal. Nothing is a waste of time.

Frank, just trying to be encouraging here:

Most comic book artists typically have to send out between 300-600 sample packages (that is minimally, 6-10 pages of work) before they get even their smallest breaks. And you know what else? that's usually only to a few companies! Yes, many times, you have to send samples to the same company, continually (different samples of course). Many companies will notice the persistence, and if the talent is there, will give you a shot. I do have some comic credits under my belt, and am working with someone now who is interested in publishing a comic!

Persistence pays off, not surrender.
