In the bunch... From Cinescape.com...

Smith not so hot on INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Looks like he’s one cast member not coming back…

Dateline: Friday, June 14, 2002

By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
By: News Editor
Source: Moviehole

Only a day after INDEPENDENCE DAY co-creator and writer Dean Devlin gave CINESCAPE some of the most complete quotes on the ID4 sequel he’s given, the biggest cast member of the original seems to be begging off the film.

Will Smith, who played the hot dog jet fighter in the 1996 alien invasion smash, said when asked about his participation in the sequel, “Zero Chance of an INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel”
----------------------------------------------

Uh Dean -- I'm available - for free even! :o)

-=JAG!

PS: Seriously, hope this doesn't push back any plans.

Oh, Oh, I think I'm slowly dying, Oh I'm almost dead. That's it I'm dead. Now Will Smith isn't comming back! ID4-2 isn't looking good. That's like Star Wars without Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. Or like The Tonight Show without Jay Leno. Uhhh, whats up with Will Smith! Uhhh, I think I'm going to be sick. ID4-2 looks like it's going to be Jurassic Park 2(You know without Dr. Alan Grant and only Jeff Goldblum).

"The Tonight Show without Jay Leno?"

I LOVED Will Smith in ID4, but here's a perfect example of why the sequel will probably do just fine w/o him, assuming they get a great replacement cast.

Ryan, I know Leno has been doing The Tonight Show for a long time, but when *I* think of that show's hosts, I still think Johnny Carson. :o)

Smith seems like a super nice guy, and made quite an addition to the movie. Some actors just don't believe in sequals, so maybe thats his reasoning, who knows. But Independence Day would do quite well as a sequal. Kinda like The Godfather, you'd see it to see where the story goes.

Why does that character have to be in the next movie any way??

Well... it gives someone else a chance to be the hero :]

But seriously, weren't the original discussions about making it a *prequel*? Of some occurance a couple of months prior to the events in ID4 that actually hinted at what was to come, but were largely ignored?

Scratch my first thoughts, MIB2 just came to mind.

A prequel would be cool, but in all honesty it seems there have been prequels every where lately.
Star Wars prequels to Flinstones prequels. And a new Hannibal prequel. Wowsers.

Also, I don't believe a prequel to ID4 would have near as much action as did the original. And one of the many rules for a sequel, I'd say, is to out do the original.

I am very interested what a second ID4 movie would be like. I'm very supportive of it. I wonder if it would even be called ID42?
I hope Jeff Goldblum returns though.

I agree. Goldblum is totally unforgettable in Jurassic Park, and was excellent in ID4. Someone should talk Smith into it.

Oh no Jag, you can't go without me. I'm not too sure about the free part though, too many bills. But at a substantial savings for sure. Maybe we could up the ante and give them some free hours work, you know, whereever extra hands are needed like good team players. It would be better than just sitting around.

Agent Pat, hey I guess I'm a little too young. When you said Johnny Carson I said, "Johnny Who?" My fault.

I believe Will Smith once told reporters, 'I don't believe that ID4 lends itself to a sequel'. Don't quote me on that by the way. I would have to say that Will Smith is one of the most important roles in this movie though. Without him it won't feel like ID4. His on screen chemistry with Goldblum was priceless. Leaving Jeff to himself would be a crime.

However I've read that Dean Devlin was quoted as saying that surprisingly, Sept. 11th, was the main inspiration of ID4-2. Maybe if we tell Mr. Smith that, just maybe he'll turn around. Beg him to read the script please.

If he still refuses. I would prefer that they explain away Smith's absence in the movie. Like saying, oh he's on the front fighting ground battles or something. But I would be repulsed by a replacement actor! That's just wrong. It would be like the Batman movies. Jurrasic Park did the intelligent thing and didn't invent another Sam Neil.

I dunno guys. Y'all know I'm allergic to Aussies but I could SO see Heath Leadger stepping into a similar roll and taking the big screen by storm.

Who else?

Think young hot shot with large ego.

Oh and this caught my eye, the link read "Battling Alien Species."
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/07/0702_020702_snakehead.html
The piece reads...

"The World Conservation Union/IUCN has prepared a pamphlet identifying 100 of the world's worst invasive alien species. Some of the more catastrophic invasions include:"

ID4??
"V"??
Aussies in Hollywood??

Don't worry. We've managed to successfully repel the Aussies in Hollywood. Where is Paul Hogan now? Making Subaru commercials. I rest my case...

;Þ

Mike, they just looked like walking catfish to me. Oh, and Ted said to tell ya your arse is his. Oop, my mistake, juuuust kidding, everyone makes some once in awhile. If Smith won't do it, which he should, then Heath would make a fine addition. Then you have in that age bracket also Adam Baldwin, Tim McDaniel, Jason Issacs, James Spader, to name a few. I'm sure the producers will make the right decision.

I really can't see Heath as an action guy. He's sort of an older Leo DiCaprio. Michael Hurst, yes: Fungus, yes: Russel Crowe, yes: Heath, uh-uh.

Fungus, he's been busy in other similar areas. God knows, he's got more money than us - his company is on the stockmarket - but then, he doesn't call his publicist every time he sneezes.

Aussie scripts are crap, their production standards are a joke, most of the stories aren't worth telling, they aren't taught standard script format, and they think creating a scene is 'arguing in public'.

Most of the Aussies actually working in Hollywood today have been taught in and by Hollywood. They then go back home and are ostracized by attemping to apply and promote standard universal tech. At least they now have an organisation in Oz they can use as a base.

Besides, Ted employs some of them.

Ted...

Ah, The Ted. Ted who I actually know as a person. Ted who I walked up and scared the hades out of at a con when I handed him the shirt from the last ep of SeaQuest when he missed the auction. He was STUNNED! And gave me every photo he ever took signed so that I would be even in the trade.

Then he thanked me. The girl with him had no clue about the shirt, but I made his day.

Chris
The FOX plant

Ohhhh, I wouldn't think of going without you (sorry for my late reply to this.. guess I missed this thread)... As for free, sure, I wouldn't mind. Sure, bills need to be paid, but what I wouldn't get in $$, I'd get in the sheer experience working on a movie/movie set. You can't put a price on that. But it'll remain a dream -- doubt my employer would let me go if the excuse I gave him was -- "I'm working on a movie for a few weeks" -- somehow don't think that'll fly. :o) -- Course if I tell him I'm playing the lead, and promise him premiere tickets.. Welll....... ;o)

Sad part, I don't even have experience for this stuff. I'm completely out of my mind for even attempting to suggest I play a lead (or dead extra) part in a movie...I'd prolly be like Cindy, ala Brady Bunch in that episode where she freezes in front of the camera. No reason for the director to yell "Cut" as JAG! wouldn't of done any "action" to begin with. [sheepish grin]

-=JAG!

Will(Shetan wrote):
Oh no Jag, you can't go without me.
