The President's spirited speech in ID4 was named the "cheesiest scene in a film" by Empire magazine recently. What do these rags know anyway?

They must have no good taste when it comes to good climaxes.
That's among one of the finest in cinematic history.

That is probably the most frightful thing I have ever heard about this movie.
I, for one, found the speech very moving, patriotic, inspiring, and pretty much true to form coming from someone who would be placed in that situation.
I think that scene did an amazing job of setting up the "feel" for the battle scene that was to come. It very effectivly set the mood for those watching that this was indeed a perilous situation and that there was a good chance they would not be coming back.. but this was something they were doing, for ALL the people of Earth, no matter what the cost.
My 3 cents worth...
The person/people who decided this have NO IDEA what they are talking about. They probably don't even regularly view this genra of entertainment.
ANYONE who has any love of the Sci fi/ Fantasy /Alien invasion etc type of films KNOWS that this was a standard climatic type speech, the kind given in a large number of these types of performances.
Not only was well written, it was EXPECTED, and I believe the movie would have been the poorer for that scene not being in there.
Well that's My 3 cents worth.

Well, I think the "borrowed" lines from Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gentle into that good night" kind of maybe put it over the top. I mean, it was appropriate, but in that vein, they should have quoted a lot more of the poem.

Yeah, but you have to remember, it was the president of the United States coming up with the speech without having his speech write handy nearby to help him prepare the speech beforehand. ;) It was just right for what the average person could come up with on short notice.
