Kefla and I had this conversation a while back, so I dug it up out of the archives. It's kind of interesting from an historic point of view. This post is an amalgamation of research done by the both of us.

So, just what was MacArthur? Army or Navy pilot? Well, probably neither.

From "The History of The U.S. Air Force" by David A. Anderton. Aerospace Publishing Ltd, 1981:

"...the National Security Act of 1947 became law on July 26 of that year. It established the single Department of Defense, and three military departments - Army, Navy and Air Force - under civilian control. It also established the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Resources Board. It took time to transfer authority from the Army to the Air Force and to organize for action. Consequently, although the National Security Act took effect late in July, it was not until September 18, 1947 that W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force. That date is the official birthday of the United States Air Force."

MacArthur was supposedly abducted on 7/4/47, which would make him either a Navy or U.S. Army Air Corps pilot since there was no USAF at that point in history. He is probably USAAC however, since it is that branch of the service that flew P-51 Mustangs. If MacArthur was a navy pilot, he did not fly a P-51. (It *is* a P-51 shown in Fear of Flying, though.) The flashbacks of the abduction show a different, probably navy plane - not a P-51 - most likely it is a Grumman F6F Hellcat.

Interesting coinky dink here: The Visitor premiered on 9/19/97, exactly 50 years and one day after the USAF was born. Also, the famous Roswell incident supposedly occurred on July 5, 1947, one day after MacArthur was abducted.

Whoa, I vaguely remember some of this . . . but then there's nothing like Pat's info posts (she *must* have a special file somewhere).

So: Adam MacArthur was described as a Navy pilot (even at Visitor.com). But he flew a P51 Mustang which is an Air Force plane. He was stationed in Gerard, Co., evidently, which appears to be an inland Air Force Base. But wait - more confusion. The U.S. Air Force was established in Sept. 1947 - AFTER MacArthur's abduction. Prior to that time, it was the U.S. Army Air Corps. The emblem on MacArthur's jacket matches that of the U.S. AAC.

It's difficult to reconcile all these facts. Maybe we've just uncovered evidence in support of our "hero" not being the real Adam MacArthur - but rather an imperfect replica of a former pilot? (tongue in cheek) I would rather see things this way: By making his background uncertain, Adam MacArthur becomes more of a legend than (fictional) historical figure. Puts him right up there with Paul Bunyan. (Now where have we heard that name recently?) ;-)

Oh, I'm counting down the days to see "Mr. Bunyan" and his "booth b****" again, Kefla. *giggle*

And yes, I like the mysterious Adam MacArthur just the way he is. Makes him more fun to "play" with.

(Shaddup Sheri!!) LOL

Hmmmmmmm! More mysteries and "coinky dinks" (to coin Pat's phrase). And the comments are hilarious - "imperfect replica" brings to mind "Mr. Perfect". And speaking of "mysterious" characters - never mind, we won't go there!

;o)
